Oscar's Crescent Hill Hardware
One of the last independent hardware stores around. Oscar's stocks a nice variety of the common items as well as catering to the Crescent Hill neighborhood with necessities for older homes. They also have a nice selection of plants and gardening supplies. If you are looking for a break from the looming aisles of the basic big box chain, check out Oscar's.

Book Stores
Carmichael's Bookstore
For 40 years, this charming bookstore (which has evolved into 3 locations in the Highlands and Crescent Hill) has provided both children and adults with a hand picked variety of books. The store name originates from the combination of the 2 owners Michael and Carol. The original owners remain in tact today as Carmichael's displays the truest sense of a family business employing over 30 individuals including a second generation. The Louisville history is evident in a pleasing selection of local pulications as well as the store buildings of yesteryear. Novels flow from the floor to essentially the ceiling and you can almost smell the nostalia of past decades. The most recent addition in 2014 was a completely separate brick and mortar Carmichael's Kids. As you might expect, this whimsical book store focuses on publications, toys and puzzles for the youth and even features story time twice a week. If you desire the smell of coffee as you enter a book store, not to worry. Bardstown Rd and Frankfort Ave locations are plopped within steps of Heine Brother's Coffee and the amazing Blue Dog Bakery!
